About Scott O'Dell
Scott O’Dell was born on May 23, 1898 in Los Angeles, California. In 1918 he was 20 years old and decided to start training for the army, but World War I ended before he finished training. Scott got his chance to serve in World War II at the age of forty. His original name was O'dell Gabriel Scott, but a journalist was mistaken by his name and changed it to “Scott O’Dell”. In 1924 he published “Representative Photoplays Analyzed” when he was 26. Over his lifetime he wrote 30 books and won over 50 awards! His favorite books were Island Of the Blue Dolphins and The Road To Damietta”.There even is a personal award after him! Scott went to four colleges, Occidental College, University of Washington, Stanford University, and University of Rome.
Scott has two stepchildren and four grandchildren. He was a track star in high school, and liked to box. Scott also enjoyed football and baseball. Most of his hobbies were fishing, reading, gardening, and traveling. Scott wrote for children, young adults, and adults. Scott O’Dell passed away in 1989.

Genre
The genre of Island of the Blue Dolphin is action adventure. The book is action adventure because there is a lot of survival problems the main character has to go through. It is also this genre because Karana, the main character, is by herself on an island and is going on many adventures to save herself until her tribe returns. One last reason this book is action adventure is because it is full of action. A lot of the action happens during storms or fights between her and the wild dogs, but some is killing sea animals to make weapons or trying to build a house. A quote from the book is “I could not hear their steps, but I was sure that they would try and surround me.” This quote shows that the book, The Island of the Blue Dolphins, is action adventure because Karana is on one of her adventures and is in the middle of an action packed scene. Another quote is “For many days, I did not think of the weapons again, not until the wild dogs came one night and howled.” This quote is about how Karana slept on a rock away from the wild dogs and slept for many nights. The dogs would scare her and would make her want to take the time to make weapons. This is why I believe Island of the Blue Dolphins is an action adventure.
Point of View
Island of the Blue Dolphins is a first-person book because the author uses the words “I” “me” and “we”. In this book the main character is the narrator, which also makes Island of the Blue Dolphins a first-person book. The definition to first-person is the main character is the narrator and the book uses “I” “me” and “we”.
