Book Summary
The Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell is a book that will make you want to not stop reading and grabs your attention right away and has a ton of action-adventure. Karana a young girl was stranded on an island and was parted from her tribe. On the island of San Nicolas, Karana has to find a way to survive and not be killed by the wild dogs. She has many obstacles to overcome on the island and everyone has an intense journey. In full hopes of her tribe coming back for her, she strives to protect herself.
Karana lived as a part of the Ghalas-at tribe and they lived on the island of San Nicolas. After the Ghalas-at tribe lost many lives to an attack, they fled the Island. Ramo, Karana’s brother, and Karana were left behind. A month after being on the island alone, Ramo was killed by the wild dogs. After the incident, Karana knew she was in danger from the dogs and had to figure out how to protect herself, find food, and find fresh water. Karana was being watched by the dogs night after night, so she started to build a house and weapons. Karana built the house out of lots of materials, such as driftwood and seaweed. She continued to weave the branches, wind the seaweed, and gather materials until she was finished.
Soon after Karana finished her house, she went onto her mission to execute all the dogs. She had killed five dogs, but after shooting the pack leader Karana felt terrible. She carried the wild dog back to her house to strengthen him. Karana cares for him and cleans his wound, on his chest, every day. When he is healing, Karana gives him a name on Rontu. Karana catches fish for Ronto and brings him to water every day until he is healed. Soon Karana becomes good friends with Rontu and he keeps her company while she is gathering food and making new and improved weapons. After a very joyful two years with Rontu, he dies and Karana is sad and lonely so she traps his son as a pet.
On a breezy day a ship came close to the island and and a canoe rowed in to the shore. Karana grabbed her essentials that she might need andran to the bushes overlooking the beach. She did not know if these people were friendly or not. Karana hid for a while, and then realized they were calling for her, and she hustled down to the beach. By the time she got down to the beach they had already started rowing back to the boat. If they had waited any longer the ship would have been thrown into the rocks from the wind. A year later the same ship came back and Karana made sure she did not get left behind on the island. Once she was on the boat she was informed that her tribe’s ship sank in a terrible storm.
In conclusion, Karana will defeat the dogs and now she is a threat to the dogs. A particularly enjoys one dog, and hopes to mend his wound. One day someone will return for her, but they will leave just as quickly.
Book Review
In Island of the Blue Dolphins is an adventurous novel that has been created by Scott O’Dell. I would rate this book a eight out of ten, because the book action packed and will keep you on the edge of your seat. There are very few characters and this effect makes the book exciting and interesting. Some of these characters are stranded on an island. A reaction of mine was excited because the characters may flee the island, but that reaction will quickly turn to sad in just a few page turns.
The author did a fabulous job putting the plot together, he made the suspense rise and fall in different scenes in the book. A lot of the characters had well thought backgrounds and they made the story have interesting and exciting adventures. The author put new and advance dialogue in that made the novel seem interactive and he described the scenery like it was right in front of you. The text was well written, clear, and easy to read. Island of the Blue Dolphins held my interest all the way from the first page to the last page. The conflicts were set up well and they used a lot of suspense to attract your interest. Karana and the wild dogs are non-forgetful characters that will interest you forever.
